I added a new feature request for the filter bar on the Workspace window (bug #41222).  Closing this report.

nevermind, I misinterpreted the _var_ convention as if such variables are special or protected.

The convention that I defined and described in the manual is both leading and trailing double underscores, though looking now, the description might not be displayed in the most obvious location...

I see what you are looking for now.  This would definitely have to be an optional feature.  The prefix '__' is just a convention we happen to use.  I could imagine other coders use a different prefix and would want to be able to specify the prefix.  Also, it is really bad to hide information from users unless they are completeley aware that the hiding is being done and have somehow acknowledged that they want it, such as a check box.

One thing that might be useful would be have an input line where user's could enter the same sort of expression that is used with the 'who' command.  This would then be applied to the Workspace listing.  This is the way that things are handled in the CLI when you might have a huge number of variables, but only want to see the variables that match a certain expression.

Something like

who x* y* z*

shows only variables beginning with x, y, or z and ignores others variables, such as 'ans', which aren't relevant.

If you want to change this behavior, then it must be optional.

your example serves well -- the workspace dock shouldn't list __my_var;  I'm attaching a screenshot.

I realized this with _run_test_suite_ which would litter the workspace dock with lots of __* variables.

Could you provide an example?

I did

__my_var = 2;

And the variable shows up in the Workspace window even though it has the internal prefix '__'.

(those prefixed with double underscore, __)

splitting up bug #41159
