Looks good to me, ran the GUI 60 or 70 times in a row and it stays maximized now. Thanks!

Mike, I have pushed the patch with changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/4e49bc41f899
Does this fix the issue in for the stable branch?

This bug looks fixed for me with the patch from bug #40823.

I do not see this behavior with another window manager (I can't remember at the moment which one I tried, lxde maybe?).

Also I suspect this may be related to bug #41093 about the GUI starting minimized, because I also sometimes see something similar when starting Octave in gnome 3. The GUI actually never appears sometimes, it starts minimized. I have to Alt-Tab switch to it, it is in last place in the switcher because it is minimized.

I did a reset layout, and still get the same effect happening after maximizing. No, the widgets just return to the size they would have if I had unmaximized the window myself.

I will try to set up another desktop environment or window manager and see if I get the same behavior at all.

When octave is unmaximized, do you see a slight change in the geometries of the doc widgets and/or of the main window after a restart (similar to bug #40691 you reported recently)?

No worries. Sometimes it takes 3 restarts, sometimes a dozen or more.

After playing with it some more, I have now seen what you thought I said the first time :) If I resize the GUI to be slightly smaller than the display area (not including the gnome-shell bar), I have now seen the GUI become maximized after 1-5 restarts.

Mike, I am sorry, I have read your posting the wrong way and thought octave accidentally maximizes from an unmaximized state.
But still the behavior is not reproducible on my system, octave stays maximized after 25 restarts.
Do you need more restarts to make this happen?

And to be clear, the dimensions are 1340x574 after this happens, the new height is only about 3/4 of the display height. It is not simply an unmaximized window that still takes up the same screen area.

No, I do not see the GUI become maximized spontaneously. The only effect I see is the maximized window becoming smaller after a random number of restarts.

In gnome-shell, if I intentionally make the GUI height larger than the display size, the height is simply truncated to the available space on the next restart. If I make both dimensions larger than the display, then yes the GUI does start up maximized the next time. But then again, after some number of restarts it spontaneously becomes unmaximized.

I am using unity and have the effect (not only with octave) that an unmaximized application restarts maximized when the window exceeds a specific size. Using your settings on my system (1200x800) I have to enlarge the window just for a few pixels and octave restarts maximized.

Does the effect also occur when you are using a smaller window size?

Yes, just starting the GUI and then pressing Ctrl-D to exit immediately.

If I delete my ~/.config/octave directory and try again, this condition comes back.

If I re-maximize after it has unmaximized, the condition happens again after some number of exits and restarts.

Does this happen without any changes on the window layout, i.e. by just starting and exiting?

If I maximize the Octave GUI it normally remembers that state and comes back up maximized as before. However, after some number of exits and restarts the GUI sometimes decides that it should no longer be maximized.

I've attached the qt-settings for when the GUI is maximized and when it modifies that setting to be unmaximized.

I'm using GNOME 3 on a 1366x768 display on this particular system if that makes a difference.
