I am closing this bug and have opened a new one (bug #41542) for the crash when repositioning widgets (comment #17).

I do not build my Octave, I just download the .dmg file from Sourceforge. I'll wait for the next release.

Ah, I did managed to get a crash. Here's what I did.

Startup config:
--- Command history / file browser in tabbed view on the left (command history focus)
--- Editor / command window in tabbed view on the right (command window focus)

I clicked the command window to undock, and then I docked it back into the Editor window.

This caused the following crash:

Can the widgets be repositioned without crash (comment #11)?

Tested on my Mac. Works great. Thank you!

I have pushed changeset
that fixes some other issues related to minimized startup. If you are building from the hg reposities, could you please test the patch?

Torsten, if I do as you suggest, the behavior is the same.

OK, got it. See attached screenshot. It still bounced twice (i.e., opened 3 times). No change.

Having problems separating them. Octave crashes whenever I try to move any one of the three into its own frame (not floating but tiled). I've tried several times.

Could you please move the widgets such that there are no tabbed wigdets, i.e. that console, editor and documentation are separated and not tabbed? What happens at the next startup?

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Nothing is floating. I notice that the first time the window opens it’s displaying the Documentation tab in the right frame, the second time it’s displaying the editor tab, and final times it’s displaying the command window. I tried closing Octave with the Documentation tab visible. When I re-opened the sequence was (1) open in Documentation, (2) open in Documentation, (3) open in Command Window.

Ah, I was unaware that the bug reporting system did not handle email traffic. Sorry about that!

In my case, the GUI initializes in a minimized state and cycles as follows:

minimized -> open -> minimized -> open -> minimized -> open.

The first time opens, it looks different than the other two times. Specifically, it opens in the top-left corner of the screen, it is a different size, and the documentation window is in focus instead of the command window. The second and third times it opens, it is in the configuration I expect it.

I've attached screenshots for both.

I experienced this with default configuration at first startup. The widgets are docked by default. Would screencast be helpful?

I mean the dock widgets of the Octave gui (editor, documentation, file browser etc.). Are they docked or floating when octave exited the last time. This configuration is recovered during next startup.

I have some widgets but rarely use them. I’m not sure how one opens an app when the widgets are floating. The background is greyed out and so the app launcher and dock are inaccessible. If you wish I can delete all widgets and try again.

Can I assume from comment #3 that the behavior does not depend on the state of the dock widgets at startup (see my comment #1)?

For what it's worth, I installed Octave on Jan 11 and experience this behavior every time I open the GUI version.

I can confirm this behavior in both the Octave Forge binary and one manually compiled using Homebrew. In fact, it minimizes twice before it stays open.

Does the behavior depend on the state of the widgets (floating, not floating)?

When I open the octave GUI from the task bar it opens then minimizes and repeats once and finally opens and stays open (the cycle is: open, minimized, open, min, open).
