It may be overly restrictive, but it is also Matlab compatible. I also wouldn't think to use issymmetric on a char matrix since it is more interesting for numeric matrices where it says something about the solution. If you really want to there is always the workaround of casting the char to a numeric matrix before calling issymetric

The function issymetric worked only on numeric matrices, which is too restrictive, because a non-numeric matrix can be called symmetric if it equals its own transpose, such as ["prose"; "razor"; "ozone"; "sonic"; "erect"]. I've changed the code to include character matrices (patch attached).
