Thanks for your help, Mike.  The gnuplot workaround is fine.  Lost user name and password, so can't log in anymore.

This bug seems likely to be related to very specific hardware/software combinations with OpenGL rather than specific to Octave.

Thanks for your bug report. I am unable to reproduce this on my laptop, which is not the same as yours, but is using an Intel integrated graphics chip.

I don't know if the problem you are seeing is specific to versions of software from Lubuntu, or your particular laptop model, but nothing can be done about this unless you can propose a fix or someone can reproduce it. Can you attach a screenshot at least to show the problem? Do you have access to another machine to see if it's only on the R51?

Is using gnuplot an acceptable workaround for you?

This shows it:

plot(1:10)

  This was an octave startup problem on Lubuntu 14.04.1 on IBM R51, Pentium M.

  After I added, in .octaverc

 graphics_toolkit('gnuplot');

 in home directory, it worked ok.

  It took a few hours of internet search to find this, however.  It was mixed in with OS startup issues, such as the need to set "forcepae" during installation of Lubuntu to make it start at all.  There were also some notes about graphics problems with Lubuntu that confused me, but that wasn't it.  Somewhat of a newbie in this world.
