Summarised:

[vt1] $ settrans /mnt /hurd/ext2fs /dev/hd0s3
      ...pid 100
      Pause...
[vt2] $ gdb /hurd/ext2fs 100
      (gdb) break read_node
      (gdb) continue
[vt1] (press Enter)
      libdiskfs/init-startup.c:178:_diskfs_init_completed: Assertion `proc' failed.

This always happens when you attach to translator, set breakpoint somewhere and continue, while settrans waits you to press Enter.  After Enter is pressed the assertion is triggered.
