In Octave, fixed point format often switches to scientific notation which creates weird alignments.

Sample code:

fixed_point_format (true)
y = [1.1e1; 1.234e3; 1.2345e5; 1.23456e7]
y =

       11
     1234
  1.234e+05
  1.235e+07

If enough significant digits are require then Octave eventually switches to fixed point format

y(3) = 1.234567e5
y =

  1.0e+07 *

   0.0000
   0.0001
   0.0123
   1.2346

Meanwhile, for the first example Matlab produces

      11
    1234
  123450
12345600

and it also switches to fixed point format when y(3) is modified.
