Correct. The problem is definitely fixed in Octave 6.x / 7.x, so no action is required for the 6.2 release.

I had a quick look at Octave 5.2.0 and it behaves exactly like bug #57635.

@jwe: This bug was about 5.2.0.
IIUC, the error shouldn't occur with 6.1.0 already.

Yes, I used 5.14 to avoid bug #59426.  If that bug is now fixed in Octave, then we should be able to move to 5.15.x for the Octave 6.2 release.

@hg200: Thanks for summarizing the other bug.

Afaict, Octave 5.2.0 for Windows was shipped with Qt 5.14.0.

So, this is very likely a duplicate of bug #57635 which was fixed for Octave 6.

Closing report.

The story behind bug #57635 was that for Qt versions >= 5.13.1 the behaviour of Qt's focus proxy was changed. What happened in Octave was that you can lose focus in the editor during writing if auto-completion is enabled or if you close adjacent tabs. However, this "feature" has been reversed for Qt greater than 5.15.x (to my knowledge) because it caused trouble also in other projects. The code in Octave 6.x and 7 works around the problem of the focus proxy and is therefore compatible with all Qt versions. However I don't know if the fix was merged to Octave 5.x and against which Qt version Octave 5.x is actually build.

@Hg200:
Exactly! Thank you very much.
I simply searched in the wrong time frame because I thought this was much, much longer ago.  Also, when some problem is solved my memory often tends to wipe it almost completely and my attention shifts elsewhere; in some ways a blessing, in other ways a curse :-)

That bug report (that I even entered - blush) must be along the ones with the most comments and I see that you also had your share there.

I hadn't seen that other bug report, but the discussion sounds exactly like what I had experienced.  So far I have not experienced the same issue in v6.1.0.

@Philip: Do you mean bug #57635 ?

The latter observation, moving focus away from and back to the editor, rings a bell about an old bug report where IIRC I commented on. Can't find it though (but I'm not very clever with searching in the bug tracker archives). Maybe be 3, 4 years ago?

i have seen similar behavior on 5.2.0. I can't ever trigger it on purpose, but on occasion I basically 'lose the cursor' in the editor.  I can highlight with the mouse, but can't make any edits. I believe switching focus away from Octave and back again usually restores ability to type.

This works for me with Octave 5.2.0 and Octave 6.1.0 on Windows.

Do you see the same behavior with Octave 6.1.0?

FWIW, I can't reproduce this on any of the Windows 10 boxes at my disposal (2 at home, 2 at work) with any of Octave-4.x, 5.x, 6.1 and dev Octave.

What you might try is to delete the GUI settings file (after making a backup of it first), it lives in your home directory:
%USERPROFILE%\.config\octave
and is called 'qt-settings'.
Make sure Octave isn't running; move the 'qt-settings' file to somewhere out of the .config subdirectory, restart Octave and try again. Octave will re-welcome you, just ignore that and try again.

If it doesn't fix your issue, can you try again with Octave-6.1.0 ? (just released).
