I have pushed cset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/2a70a068c4ab (default branch) which adds a new preference (in the shortcuts tab) for disabling menu accelerators when the command window has focus.

I have seen that I have already implemented that the menu shortcuts of the main window are disabled when the editor gets focus. Otherwise using the accelerators in the docked editor might trigger the menus of the main menu. I am preparing a patch that extends this feature for the command window, too.

FWIW, as a workaround you can use the sequence Esc followed by f or b instead of holding down Alt+f or Alt+b, if you need to use these readline functions and are averse to Ctrl + cursor keys for some reason.

If there is a way to turn off the menu accelerators all together, I suggest making it a different option from the "Disable global shortcut..." one. Chances are people want to turn off the accelerators but keep the global shortcuts.

The Alt-Key menu accelerators are not disabled by the option. I am not sure if this is possible without renaming the menus (removing the "&") and will look into this.

Nope. The option is on by default, and it does not effect the Alt-key shortcuts of opening menus.

Check out the "Disable global shortcuts when Command Window has focus" option in the "Shortcuts" tab of the Preferences dialog.  Does that do what you want?

In the GUI environment, forward-word and backward-word commands are shadowed by menu shortcuts: Alt-F triggers File menu and Alt-B triggers Debug menu. These two movement commands are essential when editing scripts in Command Window. A possible fix is to add an option turning off menu shortcuts when Command Window is focused.
