Code to reproduce in Octave:


fzero (@(x) 0.5*x + 2*i*x - 5, [-20, 100])
error: fzero: not a valid initial bracketing
error: called from
    fzero at line 223 column 5


However, in Matlab, this example throws a warning that the function must be finite and real at the endpoints.  This is a more relevant message.
