First, Octave does not appear to allow strlen arguments less than 4.  In this case, Octave switches to display '*' even when the value does fit in the requested strlen.  For example,


s = rats (ones (1,10), 2)


In Matlab, this returns a string which is 30 characters wide (2 for strlen, 1 for a single space between entries).
