You're welcome!

I don't think a non-transparent-fill PNG rule will work well; that will be ugly. We'll make a custom SVG and derive PNGs from that. Yeah, storing custom icons in /etc/icons will work; I'll send them back upstream if we come up with something good.

Thank you for taking over this issue.

Personally, I do not mind, if we extend for example

by some rule to create a PNG which is not transparent in the middle, or to store a Mac conform Icon in /etc/icons, if generating it is not possible.

Closing this as "duplicate" of https://github.com/octave-app/octave-app/issues/177 .

I've created an issue for this over at Octave.app: https://github.com/octave-app/octave-app/issues/177. @eclipse, feel free to comment or subscribe there to get updates.

I think you can close this bug here: this is an issue specifically with the Octave.app packaging, and not with Octave itself, since core Octave doesn't provide a Mac app bundle, so you have no control over what icon is used for it.

If you want, we can contribute whatever customized Mac app icon we make back upstream, but I don't know if it'd be much use for you.

The official Octave icon does not conform to the Apple human interface design guidelines for icons, specifically:

> Keep the background simple and avoid transparency. Make sure your icon is opaque,
> and don’t clutter the background. Give it a simple background so it doesn’t overpower other
> app icons nearby. You don’t need to fill the entire icon with content.

For best results, you should probably report this to and work with the macOS app packagers here: https://github.com/octave-app/octave-app/issues

I'm changing the summary to make it clear that this is about a conflict between the intentional design of the Octave icon and the Apple icon design guidelines. This may or may not ever be resolved within Octave itself.

After installation on Mac Mojave 10.11.6 are almost unable to click and open octave from the Appliications because the center of the icon is empty (transparent), and if we try to click on this area nothing will happen.

We need to click the space which has some colors (for example our blue ellipsses or orange triangles)
