Agree, it's intuitive to me that the default should match standard spreadsheet behavior. The Tab key already moves the cursor to the right, and creates new columns as necessary. The Enter key should do the same, and add new rows when the last row of the matrix is reached.

Side point: is there a reason why 16 blank rows are always appended to the variable editor?

I have no objections to supporting more options.  I just dislike that there is only one hardcoded behavior which isn't the natural one for me.

Most if not all spreadsheet programs make it a configurable option what the enter key does after editing a cell.

The UI for spreadsheets is usually that, when entering a value in to a cell and pressing <Return>, input is terminated and the cursor moves to the next row down.  I was just using the Variable Editor to enter a few numbers and I found it slow enter a table of values because I had to spend time moving the cursor to the correct cell after every input.
