Since the issue has disappeared (caused by hardware?) and was not reproduced by other users, I am closing the report.

Okay, just opened up Octave up after some time not trying it - and the context menu problem has disappeared; that is, even the most extreme right mouse clicking still behaves correctly.

What has changed? The only thing I can think of that is significant is that the laptop I'm using had a graphics chip which was playing up - but only very slightly: at odd times the interface would lock up, and it required sending interrupts to the processor, by pressing switches, unplugging things, etc, to unfreeze. Some weeks ago this fault became hard, and it required cooking the chip with a blast of hot air to repair the internal micro fractures - graphics are now fine, as is the right mouse click operation ... coincidence?

I apologise for not following up with respect to these last posts - hardware issues with my laptop, and generally being distracted by other activities has caused me to lose focus on this.

I'll aim to check this again shortly - please excuse my non-involvement!

Thanks ...

It's been a couple months since this bug has been active. Has there been any way to reproduce this issue or is this completely unexplained?

Frank - Can you clarify what you are describing, maybe post a video or a screenshot showing the problem you are experiencing with the context menus?

When you have to keep your hand "absolutely motionless during and after the press", then what happens to the menu when you start moving the mouse again in order to select a menu. Does it also immediately disappear?

Will reply this time with my correct login name ...

More careful examination has shown that the right click is extremely sensitive to movement of the mouse after the actual press down; if I concentrate on keeping my hand absolutely motionless during and after the press, then operation is normal. If there is strong motion then absolutely nothing happens - no hint of a menu; a more subtle motion triggers the immediately closing. In other words, it must be checking how much the mouse has moved after the initial click.

I have never noticed this sensitivity in other programs, including the previous Octave.

I have tested again on Windows 7 with a recent build from the default branch and can not reproduce the issues.

I have changed the title of this report in order to reflect the issue with the context menu. Could you please submit a new bug report for the issue with ignoring file changes (preferably with the exact file where this happens)?

Is it sufficient to wait a specific time for the context menu to work as expected or do you have to try it a certain number of times?

Thanks for replying!

Yes, the context menu "blips" on the screen, just enough to note its shape, and is then closed. Invoking this several times finally stabilises the window. And the condition seems to be everywhere in the interface - if you select some text in the editor, and right click to say copy it, this chaotic behaviour occurs.

The file being updated is in the installation directory, on C: - specifically, in the "testfun" folder.

Thank you for the report.

Regarding the first issue you have mentioned: Do you mean the context menu that is immediately disappearing (or what is meant by "clear the window")? Where do you click with the right mouse button?

The second issue: I remember pasts reports on similar issues but have to search the bug tracker list for more details. Is the file located on a network share on a local drive?

Just to check that I'm not going silly, I just opened the 4.4.1 version, and it's behaving far more as I remember - i.e., things happen as one would expect ...

Note that I have only tentatively investigated Octave; have never done serious work with it.

Thanks!

Has someone done even simple checking on this interface ... almost unusable, and I haven't got the inclination to work out a whole series of workarounds for the gotchas ...

Screamingly obvious is that the right mouse click is completely unrealiable, sometimes have to try a half dozen times before it doesn't immediately clear the window that is supposed to sit there, waiting for user input; but far worse is that changes in the editor don't register! Alter a line, click Save File and Run - and the old version of the line is what it processes! Saving the file from the menu doesn't help - the only way I could get the program to parse the updated text was to close Octave, and restart it ...

At the moment I have completely lost confidence in this software package ...
