@Sid: I agree with Michael that this is probably not the bug to begin exploring Octave with.  Generally, it is easiest to start with documentation bugs, next with bugs written in m-files in Octave's own language, then with bugs in Octave C++ code, and finally with bugs linking Octave with other libraries in Fortran, C++, C, etc.

This bug is in the C++ plotting system and, while simple to describe and demonstrate, it is probably going to be difficult to determine the best location to make the fix.

As an example of a possible better bug to start with, see bug #55570.  For this, you could start with

debug_on_error (true)
** code which causes the problem **

This will drop you in to a debugger precisely at the point where Octave failed and you can then inspect variables and sort out why things failed and move upwards in the function to see how variables came to have the values they do.

@Sid: Good to have you taking an interest. For the purpose
of learning the development flow this plotting bug is
OK. But, plotting is definitely not one of the "easier"
parts of any system, and certainly not in Octave.

A good place to start would be to experiment with drawing
plots to see under what conditions this bug shows up.
And, of course, keep track of what changes are suggested and
how the patches are processed and tested.

Hello, I'm an undergraduate and new to open source. I'd really like to be able to contribute to this organization, but I'm facing difficulty in finding inroads where I can begin. Could you guide me with solving this bug (or some easy bug)? I'd continue trying to solve other bugs once I understand the flow.

When the title text is large in the Y-direction, either because the font is large or the text itself appears on multiple lines, then the text is placed right on the upper boundary of the plot canvas.  This isn't visually appealing, and Matlab does a better job of leaving a small gap.  Octave does leave a gap between the bottom of the title text and the plot axes, so this padding can be coded.

Sample code to reproduce:

close all
hax = gca;
box on;
ht = title ("Hello World", "fontsize", 60);
