Final remark: after reinstall of okular on my system
the boxes are gone. In the new release antialiasing
is off by default.

Best to close this report.

The figures without fram were produced by gnuplot.
So is this the issue with GL backend not being able to make
transparent background?

Dmitri.

While building octave on a different computer I do not see the lines (yes, I viewed the files on the same computer).
So perhaps the issue again is GL driver (rendering of 0-pixel line?).

I am looking further into it. In any case I am not sure if this
is an Octave's bug, so you can close it.

Dmitri.

I tried zooming in/out a bunch with okular and on some levels I do get a small hairline around the image.  I think this must be the PDF rendererer because when I use acrobat the image is perfect at all zoom levels.  I tried changing configurations in Okular and if I disable "Graphic Anti-aliasing" then the problem goes away.

Is there anything Octave can do here?  Or can I close this report?

And, looking at plots that I have created with
Octave (dev) and included in TeX using
\includegraphics() there are no bounding lines at
any scale.
More evidence that it is texinfo 6.4

Finally, another observation: Using okular the lines
appear and disappear as zoom in/out is used. With
evince, they appear most of the times as scale is changed.

I was using okular, but using evince the plot
is surrounded by lines. BUT using adobereader there
is no surrounding box!

It appears that the surrounding box is drawn by the
dimensions of the bounding box. This does not happen
if the PDF is used in TeX/LaTeX \includegraphics()
commands.

This suggests that this is a "feature" of texinfo 6.4
and maybe others.

I tried firefox and at some zoom level the vertical lines are
not visible. I would argue that the lines perhaps a pixel wide
and it is a feature of  of a viewer not to display it.

I attached the entire file (it is < 5MB)
-- you can check with your viewer.

Hmm.  Maybe 6.1 did this better, or maybe it is the viewer?  Have you tried other PDF viewers besides evince?

Rik,
You asked about my texinfo. It is:
texinfo-tex-6.4-6.fc27.x86_64

Rik,

They did say "minor" changes on their webpage.
If you have really made it Version 3, 29 June 2007
good to include that. Anyhow, do not use too much
time on this. Actually, https is important.
Thanks.

I think the issue is with an old version of Texinfo.  What version are you using that seems to produce lines around the figures?  I'm using 6.1 and not seeing this.

@Michael: Regarding the license, the attached version was agpl-3.0.texi where the 'a' stands for Affero.  Octave uses the standard gpl-3.0 license available at https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.texi.  The only real difference I see between it and gpl.txi in the doc/interpreter directory, is that the URLs have all moved to https from plain http.  I made that change here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/ec5591efafe4).

I do see page edges for pretty much all the figures
(both vertical and horizontal)
I do not have a strong opinion if they should be there or not.

Rik,

Just about the GPL license. The one I found on
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html
is Version 3, 29 June 2007. Pretty minor changes, I
think. But it is what the GLP3 folks recommend.

I will take a screen dump, or otherwise show the
vertical bars. They are not dark, but distracting.
They could also be texinfo version dependent. If you
do not see them and not worth delaying 4.4 release
in any case.

I think the Manual is getting significantly better, and all of this has happened rather recently with a few people taking an interest in proofreading it and improving the formatting.

The license file you attached is for the Affero GPL v3 (https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#SeparateAffero) and all of Octave is currently under just GPL v3.  I don't think we can re-license what people have already contributed.

However, this did get me to look at the license header we use for each file and I see that we are still using GPL v2 syntax (although the files all say v3 and that is what counts).  I've written an e-mail to the Maintainer's list about that.

I don't think I have bars around the drawings in the manual anymore.  Could you do a screen capture to show what you mean?

There are a few things that would help in the Manual:
1. The GNU General Public License is somewhat out-of-date.
The current one, as of today, in texinfo format is
   attached.
2. All of the plots have extraneous vertical bars on both
sides. This is likely a bounding box issue. These lines
were not present in older versions of the Manual.
3. histogram plot Fig. 15.2 still looks badly drawn and
unlike what is rendered on the screen. This problem
has been known for quite a while, but I do not think
that there is another bug report about it. Rik knows
what the problem is (I think...).

Despite this, the Manual as it is should be good enough for
the coming release except maybe updating the GNU license.
