I finally pushed a change to the default branch, opting to use the same colors as Matlab instead of the Tango colors:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/638625a0186f

I think 1/1000 precision is enough for our purposes (1/256 is about 0.004).

Does "format long" show more digits for the new colors?  If so, should we care?

And do we really need to be exactly the same here?

I'd say commit whichever you think is best.  Of course, we will probably get bug reports about it being different from Matlab if we go with the Tango colors, so we might want to note that it is intentional.  Similar to the default colormap thing.

If someone really wants exactly the same colors, they can set their own default in a startup file.

Here's a patch that updates the default color order property to the 7 colors in the current release of Matlab.

For fun, I also include a patch that uses colors from the Tango project's color palette that are closest to the new Matlab colors in the same order.

Please test and feedback.

Good catch. I think the new color scheme should be followed. Is there any possible way that this array of 8 RGB tuples could be considered intellectual property?

In 2014 Matlab changed the list of colors used by default in plots (the "ColorOrder" property of axes) from this:

0.0000 0.0000 1.0000
0.0000 0.5000 0.0000
1.0000 0.0000 0.0000
0.0000 0.7500 0.7500
0.7500 0.0000 0.7500
0.7500 0.7500 0.0000
0.2500 0.2500 0.2500

to this:

0.0000 0.4470 0.7410
0.8500 0.3250 0.0980
0.9290 0.6940 0.1250
0.4940 0.1840 0.5560
0.4660 0.6740 0.1880
0.3010 0.7450 0.9330
0.6350 0.0780 0.1840

Should Octave follow that new scheme in future releases, or is it is considered only an aesthetical issue, rather than a "problem" of compatibility?
