Yes, I haven't had any comment on the new approach I proposed for printing text strings using gl2ps in bug #31468. At least the printout for "small" strings with superscripts like "10^{2}" is really good looking I think. If people think the approach is promising I'll polish and push the patches and then this bug is easily fixed.

The inability to print superscripts is the reason why I have left this part of the code remain as is.  I just didn't feel that there was enough of a visual improvement from "1e2" to "10^{2}" to warrant it.

Tick labels are currently displayed as %e formats in log axes. I find this ugly (and not ML compatible but that is not so important here) so I'll attach a patch when I have a bug n#.

There is a drawback though: until Octave has the ability of printing superscripts (see progress in bug #31468), the image output will be displaying e.g. "10^{2}" which in turn is not better (if not worst) than the current "1e2".
