I checked in an additional changeset that should fix this problem:

  http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/e195d8408ce8

If not, let me know as bootstrap runs without errors for me now.

Doing fresh build from hg clone I get:
automake: error: cannot open < liboctave/operators/smx-op-inc.mk: No such file or directory
autoreconf: automake failed with exit status: 1
./bootstrap: autoreconf failed

I tried

1) Removing all *oct-stamp files, make all
2) make clean, make all
3) make distclean, configure, make all
4) make maintainer-clean, bootstrap, configure, make all

All of these failed.  However, the new patch avoiding stamp files works just fine.  Marking bug fixed and closing report.

I checked in the following changeset to avoid the stamp files:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/925fdd91abba

One problem is that if the .oct file (a symbolic link on Unixy systems) is removed but the stamp file remains, then the .oct file link won't be recreated.  I'm not sure what the best fix is here.  Simply use cp or install instead of ln -s and do away with the stamp file idea?  Should the dependency also be on the ultimate shared library file (the name extracted from the .la file) instead of the .la file?

Can you try removing all the dldfcn/.*oct-stamp files from your build tree and run make again and let me know if that works?

Oops, maybe I broke it again before pushing the changeset.

I saw problems like this once while I was working on the changes but I've built a number of times now from scratch without problems.

Is _init_fltk_.oct actually generated in your build tree now?  I think my problem was that it wasn't generated correctly.  I thought I fixed that problem and it is working for me now with the changes I checked in.

After cset 4f6ae6b94abe which added better support for '--enable-silent-rules' I get all sorts of problems using run-octave.

There are no toolkits available for plotting and the current directory '.' is not in the path().
