This doesn't happen with the FLTK toolkit. You might try using

at the start of the script as an option. Or you can use the drawnow() call.

In any case, this is another example of why Octave developers are trying to switch away from using the gnuplot toolkit. I'm not sure this will be fixed, but I'll mark the bug as confirmed.

When I run the attached file from the octave CLI interface everything works as expected.

When I run the attached file from a startup file implementation, a la:
octave BugRecreationAttempt.m
I get the following behavior

I try to plot using menu choice 1. The nothing happens.
I try to plot using menu choice 2. The plot from menu choice 1 appears.

Everything continues to happen one plot out of sync.

I am using gnuplot:
G N U P L O T
Version 4.6 patchlevel 3 (Gentoo revision r0) last modified 2013-04-12
Build System: Linux x86_64

Workaround that works: If I throw a drawnow at the end of my do/until loop the startup script implementation works fine.
