When looking at other editors the status bar is the normal place where you expect the line/col indicator. Changeset
adds a user preference for hiding the status bar. Can this report be closed then?

Really a lot? On my display it is just around 1.5 times the editor line height.

In that vertical space (status bar) we could also have icons for insert/overwrite mode. Then, display of the entire status bar could be a preference.

Or those icons/values could be moved to the right of the main menu bar - we wouldn't need the status bar at all then.
