There was no method to "undo" autoload before. Versions before the inclusion of "remove" will keep the function until the end of the Octave session.

 PKG_DEL: try ; autoload ("disconnect", which ("socket"),
"remove") ; catch ; end;

ok, I made a test with

// PKG_DEL: try ; autoload ("disconnect", which ("socket"), "remove") ; catch ; end;

which works in 3.8 and 3.6, have not tried in 3.4 yet.
It is a bit ugly, but hey it can be removed in a distant future:-)

What was the method to remove functions in 3.6?

Is there anything bad with doing it like this?

Yes. pkg() will create PKG_ADD and PKG_DEL scripts from such comments in the source.

The problem is that such change would bump the next release dependencies by a lot.

The .cc file is full of // PKG_ADD directives, do you mean
there should be complemented with // PKG_DEL as well?

The sockets package defines a bunch of functions from its single oct file. The problem is that once the package is unloaded, they stay around.

This can be fixed by adding PKG_DEL instructions to unload them with

autoload ("foos", "socket.oct", "remove")

The problem is that this feature was only added to a recent version (not sure if 3.8 or 3.6).
