Hello Hsing-yen,

I think the Presentation Forms-A range is precisely what the original reporter mens by "ligatures", and she explicitly said this is not what she is referring to.

A lot of work was put into a solution for this, and a lot of disucssion happened off-line. As far as I know, it was mostly resolved.

Since then, another issue has arisen. A later test showed some letters failing to connect due to kering somehow being performed in reverse (like the table says to kern a and e, but instead the combination e with a is affected). This was surprising, as I thought it had been tested before. I wonder if the system chnaged.

Well there are a couple of options for kerning direction, and I experimented. As I recall, nothing has been completely satisfactory.

But again, this too had nothing to do with the original issue.

I think adding more glyphs in Arabic Presentation Forms-A range would be helpful for them.

So, I shall enumerate the letters which don't link, I presume you already know the issue of basic shapes, for those shapes determine the way contextual forms are to be implemented. I shall remark only when the particular character deviates from its "mother" character.

Also, please notice this doesn't mean an endorsement of glyph shapes, I won't deal with that here, here I'm only concerned with contextual forms. Thanks for your understanding.

U+066E, U+066F, U+0675, U+0676, U+0677, U+0678, U+067D, U+0695, U+069A, U+069B, U+069C, U+069D, U+069E, U+069F, U+06A1, U+06A2, U+06A3, U+06A5, U+06A6, U+06A7, U+06A8, U+06B2, U+06B4, U+06B5, U+06B6, U+06B7, U+06B8, U+06B9, U+06BA, U+06BB, U+06BC, U+06BE (like HEH, but isolated form=initial form and final form=medial form, so to all extents and purposes it has only two instead of four contextual forms), U+06BF, U+06CE, U+06D1.

Not really, here we're talking about contextual forms, not ligatures; as I said in the other topic, ligatures in Arabic are something of a "cool" contextual forms, but here we're talking of basic and necessary stuff really.

I shall check the letters one by one and then report back here :)

This issue is in nature identical to bug #39918.

But oh dear it's a lont of work. Oh dear.

Yes, please Rosella, if you would, make a list.

Lots of letters which should normally have not only final forms, but also initial and medial are only present in isolated form. For instance U+06BC ARABIC LETTER NOON WITH RING or U+06B4 ARABIC LETTER GAF WITH THREE DOTS ABOVE.

Do you want me to check every letter for you? I'd do it gladly.
