Ryan, sorry we couldn't help.  If things are still not working for you after your package manager attempts you can come back here.

I'm closing this report since there is nothing to be done right now.

I second Rik's comment that building on Linux ought to be easy. I'm using CentOS 5.7, and the package manager based install fails due to some problem with the hdf5 library. (From searching around it seems that this problem's resolved in CentOS 6, and my experience with CentOS is that they don't worry too much about fixing older versions.)

It's probably possible to still use .rpm while specifically excluding the hdf5 dependencies but I haven't tried that. Trust me, I would use the package manager if I could! Even when I used Gentoo, if Portage failed I usually just started hunting for binaries! I'm just not very adept using/debugging Make.

Ben, thanks for helping. I've attached configure.log. "./tests/fntests.log" was not created, or was created and not saved. It's not there!

At this point, learning to use the package manager while excluding the hdf5 library seems like my simplest recourse.

Thanks all,

Another informational request, your reported operating system is Linux.  Could you tell us which one?  By and large building on Linux is the easiest of the three major OS (Unix, Mac, Windows) so I'm surprised that this is such an ordeal.

When configure is done, it saves "./configure.log".  This file contains a lot of info that can be useful in debugging the problem. Please attach this file as well.

When "make check" is run, the file "./tests/fntests.log" is also created and saved. Was this file created?

My naive guess is that the problem you are having is related to build-time or run-time dependencies. You attempt to ensure all run-time dependencies are present by installing Octave via you package manager. Just install the most recent version available and then remove it (the run-time dependencies will remain).

Thanks all for helping me to debug my installation.

OK, I confirmed that my Texinfo installation was problematic. Actually, there was no texinfo executable (although TeX Live is installed; I use it regularly.)

Before Rik's comment, I tried to install texinfo and edited the Makefile.in located in the build-aux directory to point to it. Basically, I started debugging any broken paths in that Makefile.

Finally, I got an indication the compilation was complete:

Octave successfully built.  Now choose from the following:

But it crashed with a segfault on the first execution.

THEN, I followed-up on Rik's suggestion (missed that configure option, and I was looking for it [actually a no-TeX-documentation option]) and the same thing happened, basically.

SO, to be clear, I first ran "make clean" and then the following configure line:

./configure --without-hdf5 --without-qhull --with-blas=/usr/lib64/libblas.so.3.0.3 --with-lapack=/usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3.0.3 --disable-readline --disable-docs

The compilation appeared to succeed, then I ran "make check." I've attached the "make check" output.

By the way, I'm certainly a non-expert, and perhaps my original bug report title was inappropriate (it has since changed), but  I can't get an executable working: that's my priority, and that's the spirit of my bug report. The current title seems to cast this as a problem making documentation, when even "--disable-docs" is included.

Thanks for your help,

The audio.texi file is fine.  Ben is probably correct that there is something wrong with your Texinfo installation.  As an alternative, you could build the Octave without the documentation by adding '--disable-docs' to your configure line.

The audio.texi file looks good to me.

I'd guess there is something wrong with your TeX/LaTeX/Texinfo install. I suggest you subscribe to the help-list

and ask the Octave community for help to debug the problem.

Just in case, can you attach audio.texi ?

I'm trying to compile Octave on Centos5.7.

I ran the "configure" script with:

 ./configure --without-hdf5 --without-qhull  --with-blas=/usr/lib64/libblas.so.3.0.3 --with-lapack=/usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3.0.3 --disable-readline

I've attached the Makefile and also a log file to which I redirected some of the errors that I'm also excerpting below. (The filenames end in a '2' but that's only the file I uploaded; mentally remove the '2' from the filenames, please!)

The compilation failed right at the end, with some of the last errors being:

Making all in interpreter
make[3]: Entering directory `/home/me/Desktop/octave-3.4.3/doc/interpret
./config-images.sh ../..
