This has been fixed by properly waiting for all writes, and disabling
client write operations.

Almost everytime I boot my Hurd VM, it says the ext2 root filesystem wasn't closed properly and runs fsck on it. I brought this on IRC and Samuel said:

youpi> pochu: there are apparently issues with syncing last bits of ext2fs
