In a QEMU system, accessing the same file through ext2fs (backed by a disk partiton image file) and fatfs (on-the-fly generated by QEMU from a directory hierarchy), these files generally are reported by cmp to differ at ``char 8193''.  Copying such a file off of the fatfs will result in a bus error and the file being truncated to 32768 bytes.

The problem is likely to be in fatfs, as GRUB can successfully access and load files off of the QEMU-generated fatfs.
