This was a trivial change so I checked it in under jwe's name on the stable branch (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a1476e3ea73d). This will be a part of the 7.2 bug fix release.
Use:
>> load imgsc >> msgbox('123','MSGBOX Title', 'custom', imgsc)
ans = -1.5636
>> msgbox('123','MSGBOX Title', 'custom', img)
ans = -43.051
for real image test, it works fine.

I tested on Windows and Linux, it works fine.

The attached change allows
msgbox ("message", "title", "custom", rand (32, 32, 3))
to work for me, but the whole block of code that attempts to decode the "custom" cdata and colormap arguments could use some work to perform more complete validation.

msgbox() throws error when using custom cdata. Here is my code:
>> img=imread('msgbox.png'); >> imgsc=imagesc(img); >> msgbox('123','MSGBOX Title', 'custom', imgsc)
