I fixed this with commit 13bc7e5d95dd ("HOST: Reimplement and add support for TIMELIMIT subcommand.").

The documentation for the SPSS 16 version of HOST no longer mentions the possibility of specifying no command.  It also says the following:

>The HOST command runs synchronously. Commands that launch applications result in the
>suspension of further SPSS processing until the application finishes execution, unless you
>also specify a time limit (see keyword TIMELIMIT on p. 874). For example, in Windows
>operating systems, if a file extension is associated with an application, simply specifying a
>file a name an extension on the command line will launch the associated application, and no
>further commands will be executed until the application is closed.

That's a much clearer specification than before.

It would appear to generate two messages in the output viewer:

"This command cannot be empty"
"This command is not executed"

What does HOST do in the SPSS GUI?

The HOST command doesn't do anything sensible when run from the GUI.  In a GUI it's probably somewhat redundant, but I think for completeness sake we should have it.  The question is, what should it do:

  • Start a shell in the syntax window;
  • Open a new terminal window, and wait for it to close;
  • Open a new terminal window and contiue; OR
  • Something else ?
