I cannot reproduce it.  Works fine for me with xterm, rxvt, gnome-terminal, and terminology.  The former two start out with a light background, the later two with an dark background.  When the console is started, each terminal switches to a dark background, and the result looks reasonable in each case.

Note: though it's not the same, I too have troubles with the ncurses driver over ssh from xterm: things are written black on white, and cursor doesn't properly move on the last line when the terminal is not tall enough.

Subject: Hurd console missing login prompt when using ncurses driver over ssh
Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 10:54:21 +0100

Package: hurd

Version: 20050513-2

Running the following command:

# console -d ncursesw /dev/vcs

over an ssh session produces a black screen instead of a login prompt.
