> I believe the behaviour changes in 1.23.0 (for pdf). If the lowercase Greek characters are found in the current (text) font they are no longer forced to italics, see commit d58625a25f2c1732b863d64a259d04a4e61c829d.

As they used to say, "if my calculations are correct," ...that commit will no longer be necessary and should even be reverted.

The idea behind this ticket is to get parity of the slants of lowercase Greek letters via another route.

>  This could be further refined to apply only to font S, using .fschar but I could not get it to work!

Yes, I think that will bear looking into, for eqn's benefit in particular.  Maybe the request is broken and needs to be fixed.  Then this ticket can be postponed too and we'll have a chain of three...

I believe the behaviour changes in 1.23.0 (for pdf). If the lowercase Greek characters are found in the current (text) font they are no longer forced to italics, see commit d58625a25f2c1732b863d64a259d04a4e61c829d. This could be further refined to apply only to font S, using .fschar but I could not get it to work!

This might be my most disruptive proposed change yet, though I expect it to be of low impact given another change I have in mind.

Modern fonts make Greek letters, which are text glyphs, available in a variety of styles just like Latin letters.

This is unlike the "Special" font commissioned by Bell Labs for the Graphic Systems C/A/T, which had upright capital Greek letters (only) and italic lowercase Greek letters (only).  See groff_char(7).

We should stop forcing lowercase Greek special characters to be italic (by assigning these names only in italic font description files) anywhere this is possible.

See bug #64231 for a counterpart I'd couple to this proposal.
