Yes, the 2012 release was like that.  This is fixed in SVN.

Well, this bug report platform does not support Unicode, and some messages are lost. I resume from the history:

I look up the characters in gucharmap under Debian Buster, and these characters are rendered by the font FreeSerif. They are rendered like \mathcal, instead of the bold version of \mathscr as in the description.
