Don't forget the Cyrillic letter ј U+0458 which has similar kerning issues.  I checked it, and found it to be rather over-kerned on the right.  I relaxed the kerning on the right side.

Hi,

It seemed to me the worst problems were in the bold italic face.
I just committed a change to fix those.

Any other improvement, especially before letters like Cyrillic м, would be better handled with kerning.  But that is a delicate thing, to be handled in another release, if it is still deemed necessary.

Hi Alexey,

I typed in something like your image.  I do some questionable spacing of the letters. See attached.

But your image is substantially different from mine.  I do not think you are using the same version of GNU FreeFont that I am.

I suppose you're using a recent build from SVN?  Or?

Please double-check with the terminal command
    fc-list | grep Free
that the cached fonts are the ones you think they are.
