yeah, the glyph was wrongly formed, and appeared in two different kern tables.
(Note to self: write script to find cases of glyphs in two different kern tables.)

In FreeSerif Bold Italic, U+0272 LATIN SMALL LETTER N WITH LEFT HOOK looks like U+014B LATIN SMALL LETTER ENG and is kerned too much into the preceding letter.
