Hi Hsing-yen,

again, could you be more specific as to what you are seeing, what seems wrong to you.

In the attached, the kerning seems pretty good to me.  The macron on i is here and there closer than I would like to capitals...

I found there is a small problem for kerning in BUC words. When I copied the BUC semple text from Wikipedia, I found Nĭk-tàu kerned badly in FreeSerif Italic and Bold Italic, Cī-hâ also kerned badly in FreeSerif Bold Italic.

You can see this sample text from here:

I found the difference, but I don't understand why it causes this problem.

There are special Unicode characters, U+1E72-3, U and u with dieresis below.  But I find no special characters for the other vowels with a dieresis below.

And indeed the dieresis in those precomposed forms was positioned slightly differently from that prescribed by the mark positioning anchors.  This in itself is a little bug, which I will fix.

BUT, there is nothing I can think of that would have called for the replacement of the vowel+mark by the precomposed letter.  There are table entries to go the other way, which are activated by the small-caps feature.

It remains a mystery, and it worries me.  We need to understand how this techonology works.

I also find this problem in FreeSans, but the result is reverse.

I see it in Firefox on Linux.  The dieresis is very slightly higher under the U and u than under the other vowels.

But its origin is a complete mystery.  I double-checked the font, and the y-coordinate of the positioning anchor for u is identical to that for the other vowels.

I'll have to think about it.

(Normally I would first guess it was a quirk of the font rendering software, but I read BabelPad uses MS UniScribe, where Firefox on my system is using Harfbuzz.  It would seem unlikely.)

Hi Hsing-yen,

I don't see that effect.

Please send us a screenshot.
