From what I have gathered, र + ृ = रृ is a special case, where U+0930 + U+0943 are represented as  U+0930 + U+094D  + U+090B i.e. र + ् + ऋ = र्ऋ.

I don't think any of the other combinations are impacted.

Even this combination is quite rare and used only in 4-5 words.

The below is now in SVN, and in the snapshot.

What I don't understand is the encoding.

Maybe U+0960 and U+0961 were added to the standard later, so maybe people were still encoding them as a combination.  Should they still be encoding them this way, though?

And I'm very unsure of U+090B and U+090C, because I think these have been in from the beginning...  I was just guessing by analogy and shape that they would share a similar encoding.

Could you check into this Shree?  Should there be two encodings for these letters?

There was some confusion in the below, which I only realized when I tried to implement the lookups.

I think there are 4 combinations like this:

ra + rvocalic : U+0930 + U+0943 = U+090B
ra + rrvocalic : U+0930 + U+0944 = U+0960
la + rvocalic : U+0932 + U+0943 = U+090C
lla + rrvocalic : U+0933 + U+0944 = U+0961

Have I got that right?

Hi again Shree,
That's great work, thanks!  I think I'm starting to understand.

I just didn't recognize the glyphs in the other fonts

The glyphs look like some already in FreeSerif, but they are set to work as "Calcutta" style glyphs.

Am I wrong? we are discussing the Unicode characters
   U+0960 and U+0961
And these should simply also be available as a ligature of ra and U+0962 and U+0963?

If that is the case, this is pretty easy to set up.

Hi Steve,

the only info I have found so far on this is at:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/hindi/oMgVX9NDOeA/2uE6IH7aqT0J

where Yogendra Joshi says:

According to him, in sanskrit books र्+ऋ is NOT written as रृ but as र्ऋ.

Hi Shree,

Please keep in mind I will want not only images, but some verification that a glyph is legitimate.  For example, if I've overlooked it in the Unicode book. please point that out.  Or if there is a Sanskrit grammar or something that shows this glyph, that would be good.

I am still investigating this at my end. I had filed the bug on seeing difference in display between sanskrit2003 and freeserif.
Need to check which is right.

Also, the same combination displays differently on Chrome and Firefox.

I will get back with images.

Note:

र + ृ = रृ (shows up the same as above in my default font on firefox) it should be different

Hi,

Perhaps I just don't know how this form should look. The reason for that is: most fonts do just what FreeSerif does: they place the rrvocalic sign beneath the ra.

However, I did some experimenting with below-base forms on ra, and found some fonts indeed do something quite different.  See attached image and HTML file.
The last line of my image of Devanagari fonts on my Linux system shows Sahadeva producing some very surprising glyphs.

I am unfamiliar with this combination.  Could you point me to references?

Hello again Shree,

I really need an image here.  To me रृ is being displayed as I expect.

What form is right and what form is wrong?

Also, what application are you using to display the text?

रृ is being displayed as र‍ृ

This matches the rendering in Kokila font but does not match Sanskrit 2003, Chandas and Sahadeva fonts for sanskrit.
