Is a timeout shown in the first place? If not most likely explanation is trouble with keyboard which sends some keys constantly

Hi today I had the same error:
Ubuntu 12.04 64bit installed and after start GNU Grub freezes and I'm unable to use my keyboard to select an entry.
I tried to reinstall Grub with a Live CD and chroot ... didn't work but I found the error!!!

I'm always switching of the power of my computer manually. My BIOS battery seems to be empty and some BIOS configurations were lost.
I had to enable the "USB legacy support" for the USB keyboard on integrated chipset (in the BIOS menu), which was disabled. An now on the next start I'm able to use my keyboard and start my Ubuntu as usual.

Hope this helps and saves you some time I took me about 2 hours to find out...

Hi Nicolai -

Thanks for the suggestion. I booted a live CD and checked my grub.cfg size as you said. It was not really that big, just 4k (Xubuntu is the only OS installed on that machine). I went ahead and disabled 30_os-prober anyway because it isn't needed. A reboot later I saw nothing had changed and the grub menu was still frozen. I'm sorry to say I don't think the two issues share a solution. Thanks again for the feedback.

Hello Ian,

I had the same / a similar problem for the last two weeks until I realised just today that due to an error of os-prober (including grub.cfg of system partition in grub.cfg) my grub.cfg had increased to a size of 5 MB with thousands of entries.
Maybe your error has the same cause, so if your /boot/grub/grub.cfg is bigger than some kB (mine is 16kB now) try disabling the 30_os-prober-script in /etc/grub.d by writing a "exit 0" before the "set -e" and rerunning update-grub.

Xubuntu 12.04 LTS x86
Grub 1.99-21ubuntu3.9

Grub freezes on the menu at every boot. The menu is fully drawn, but it does not accept any keyboard input and it never times out. The numlock LED responds to key-down events (LED on == key down, LED off == no key down), but no other noticable interactions with the system can be had. The system will boot 100% on a Xubuntu live CD. I have tried reinstalling grub (live CD -> mount HD -> chroot -> grub reinstall) but it had no effect.

I realize that I am not providing much diagnoatic detail; I'm not sure how to coax such detail from a frozen system. Please let me know what I can do to get the information needed to locate the source of the problem. Thank you.
