I completely reject wrongly installed grub.
I did all test cases identically and reproducibly - under QEMU the same disk (all versions) boots fine, while 1.98 versions fail only on soekris board.

I can run any debug scripts, however, only possibility for output is serial console. Can bootinfo script be made to output to serial?

Looks like the grub-install wasn't run correctly (e.g. on wrong drive) or not at all. Could you rerun it? If this doesn't help please supply the output of bootinfo script.

1.98-1ubuntu12

Versions which does not work:
1.99-rc1-13ubuntu3
1.99-8ubuntu1

Description:
When booting Soekris board nothing gets shown by serial output (looking on disk activity looks like no booting process happens).

Soekris boards have only serial output.
Tested the same "no working" versions with qemu - boots fine.

This is soekris/serial specific issue.
