You don't need to reinstall whole system, just "sudo aptitude install grub-pc" and chose all harddisks (but no partitions). In case of problems http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide may be of help. To diagnose problem further I'd need the output from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

I see, so it might be an issue of the package installer or OS setup procedure. I just wonder why the installer would present an erratic behavior only on that particular hardware (if there is the chance of a bug in the setup procedures of ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 I guess it would not work correctly also on different hardware).

However I'm not going to try the grub-install command directly now that the system is running smoothly with grub1 so I think you can defer the issue, unless somebody else reports similar problems on that hardware.

Should I need to preform a reinstall again on that machine, I'll try running grub2 commands directly from a recovery CD.

Just a final remark, error 2 just appeared once and not in the target hardware configuration, I've just reported it for reference if it would have been useful in locating the source of this issue.

Which grub-install command did you use? Since GRUB2 has no visible error numbers "Error 2" means that you haven't installed GRUB2 properly (grub-install /dev/sda). Use grub-install directly if you report bugs here. We don't handle possible problem with dpkg incorrectly running grub-install on wrong device or not at all

I've performed 4 different clean installations of OS on the machine, always with the same BIOS and boot loader configuration:

boot order: CD-ROM, HDD (only hdd on system at installation time)
boot flag set with installer partitioner
boot loader installed to MBR of first and only hard drive.

Both ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 failed to perform the first reboot after OS setup;
A test with Windows XP booted correctly;
A final setup with ubuntu 8.04 booted fine, even after a dist upgrade to 10.04.

Most relevant difference seems to be the MBR / boot loader: both windows and Grub1 were booted by the BIOS, Grub2 were not so I thought of a Grub2 issue.

If there is another software setting the MBR besides GRUB during the setup then that other software might bring the issue as well.

After each failing to boot setup I've also tried removing the CD-ROM from the boot order, with no success.

Error 2 was recorded before the final 8.04 setup, again with 10.10 on a different drive temporarily connected to the system (and for that I did not verify the BIOS setup)

Partitioning scheme was always the same with root partition as the first partition on the drive.

Finally, regarding GPT I have not configured any partition table format so the default for each installer was used, however  I've always set the bootable flag during partitioning.

"BOOT DISK FAILURE" is a BIOS message and not one from GRUB. It means probably that your BIOS isn't configured to boot from right disk. Another possibility is that you didn't do grub-install on right drive (be sure to install to MBR e.g. grub-install /dev/sda and not grub-install /dev/sda1). Also some BIOSes check that at least one partition is active. Be sure that it's the case especially if you use GPT (then protective entry must be active)

Do not know how to change the title, the board is an A7V8X-X as seen from dmi information

The following versions of grub2 are unable to boot on the asus motherboard in subject:
1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3
1.98-1ubuntu5

Tested by a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.1 and 10.10

With one drive (with Maxtor 6L160P0 drive) there is no boot at all "BOOT DISK FAILURE" while with another drive (now disconnected) the error was error2.

grub1 from Ubuntu 8.04 boots without problem.

Here follows some dmi info:
