Sat 06 Nov 2010 04:13:50 PM UTC, comment #5: I see, so it might be an issue of the package installer or OS setup procedure. I just wonder why the installer would present an erratic behavior only on that particular hardware (if there is the chance of a bug in the setup procedures of ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 I guess it would not work correctly also on different hardware).

Sat 06 Nov 2010 03:18:49 PM UTC, comment #4: Which grub-install command did you use? Since GRUB2 has no visible error numbers "Error 2" means that you haven't installed GRUB2 properly (grub-install /dev/sda). Use grub-install directly if you report bugs here. We don't handle possible problem with dpkg incorrectly running grub-install on wrong device or not at all |

Fri 05 Nov 2010 08:24:20 AM UTC, comment #2: "BOOT DISK FAILURE" is a BIOS message and not one from GRUB. It means probably that your BIOS isn't configured to boot from right disk. Another possibility is that you didn't do grub-install on right drive (be sure to install to MBR e.g. grub-install /dev/sda and not grub-install /dev/sda1). Also some BIOSes check that at least one partition is active. Be sure that it's the case especially if you use GPT (then protective entry must be active) |

You don't need to reinstall whole system, just "sudo aptitude install grub-pc" and chose all harddisks (but no partitions). In case of problems http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide may be of help. To diagnose problem further I'd need the output from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/
