It was a bug in windows which was unable to handle a tiny free memory region left after install. GRUB doen't create such regions anymore. If problem persists please open a new bugreport

The problem is something to do with the RAID controller.

I had to move one of my RAID harddiscs to other equipment. Changing 'Drive Controller' in my BIOS from 'RAID On' to 'RAID Autodetect/AHCI' allows me to get to my second XP using:

root=(hd1,1)
drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)
chainloader (hd1,1)+1
boot

To double check I changed the 'Drive Controller' back to 'RAID On' and used the commands above and I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. (Having the 'Drive Controller' as 'RAID On' but with no RAID discs set up still allows me to get into my first XP).

Then changing the 'Drive Controller' back to 'RAID Autodetect/AHCI' allowed me to get to my second XP using the above commands.

I went in to Grubs command line but couldn't figure out how to call or run ntldr /ntldr. If you can give fuller instruction I will try again.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 8400 with bios revision A09.

XP professional on hd0 was installed by me from the installation CD supplied with my computer. I use 'Acronis True Image Home V9' to backup my hard disc and I think at some point I have restored the partition from one of the backups.

XP professional on hd1 is a clone of the one on hd0 (I use acronis to restore one of the backups made from hd0 on to hd1). I change the name of the disk but the UUID of hd1 looks like its the same as the UUID of hd0 - could this be the problem? I'd be happy to change the UUID or install a fresh XP from the CD if it would help to test to see if this is the cause of the problem.

The only program I know of that could affect the boot is Acronis but I think it only does this duing a restore session and only then if its restoring the partition that the operating system is runing from.

What kind of install disk did you use? What kind of computer is it? Are there any programs potentially affecting the boot? I was unable to reproduce this problem in kvm. Could you also try:
ntldr /ntldr
instead of chainloader ?

Hi. I think this bug shows itself on my computer. I've recently done a clean install of ubuntu 10.04 and now I can no longer get to my second windows XP installation from the grub2 menu.

Before installing ubuntu 10.04 I had ubuntu 9.?? and grub1, I had no problems getting to my second window XP using that setup.

While searching for a solution to my problem I found bug report #29977 (I assume this bug report is the new bug report mentioned from #29977) and followed the steps inside it but I still have the problem.

I'm still fairly new to grub and linux and I'm not fully on top of the terminology. e.g. I know hd1 and sdb are hard-discs but I'm not sure if they always represent the same hard-disc.

I've got 4 hardiscs, the last two are set up as RAID. My bios says all discs are controlled by the RAID BIOS.

Grub shows my second hard disc (which has my second copy of XP) as hd*1*, Ubuntu shows my second harddisc as sd*c*. When grub.cfg is generated, for the menu entry of my second XP the root is set to hd2,1 - so I'm never going to get to my second XP using the menu.

From bug report #29977 this is what I've done:

- I got the grub trunk mentioned, compiled it, installed grub2 and created grub.cfg.
- From grub2s command line I did ls (hd0,1)\ and got the directory listing of my first XP.
- From grub2s command line I did ls (hd1,1)\ and got the directory listing of my second XP.
- I tried:
    root=(hd1,1)
    drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)
    chainloader (hd1,1)+1
    boot
    and got a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner.
- I tried:
    root=(hd1,1)
    drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)
    chainloader (hd1)+1
    boot
    and got a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner.
- I tried:
    root=(hd1,1)
    chainloader (hd1,1)+1
    boot
    and my computer booted into my first XP.
- I tried:
    root=(hd1,1)
    chainloader (hd1)+1
    boot
    and my computer booted into my first XP.

Bazzarly, I can get into my second XP if I go to grub2s command line and just type exit.

If I can be of any help tracking this bug down let me know.

Al.

Windows XP fails to load if drivemap is active and swapping windows drives. Probably something in interrupt handlers.
