no answer to retest request. Since when I committed the USB functionality I tested it, closing the bug.

You need to run autogen.sh first. Now the USB functionality is merged back into trunk.

I am expiring similar problems although less frequent.My mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H.
I checked out the usb branch via: bzr branch http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/r/grub/branches/usb  but there appears to be no configure file in it.
So how to I proceed in building grub?

This is actually a BIOS bug. Fortunately GRUB offers an alternative. Could you try "usb" branch and add following to your  /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="ohci uhci"
GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT="usb_keyboard" ?

if "Legacy USB" is not enabled, the KB is totally nonfunctional in the boot menu.

if "Legacy USB" is enabled. some times the USB kb works fine.
Most of the times, when the first key pressed, the count down stops, and the kb stops working.
i.e. press enter, the default OS will boot. press UP or DOWN, the menu highlight moves 1 item. press ESC, the count down stops.

pull out and plug in the kb again, still not working.

the USB keyboard and mouse works fine under Linux and Windows.

GRUB 1.97.4 installed using apt, from Ubuntu repositories.
And, already added "TERMINAL_INPUT=usb usb_keyboard" in /etc/default/grub and then update-grub2

hardware:
Suermicro P4SCT
Celeron 2.0GHz, 128k cache
512M DDR X 4
80G IDE HDD and IDE to SATA adapter, MBR partition table
USB KB + Mouse
