scroll was nil under some circumstances

On different computers equipped with SPARC, GWorkspace crashes on startup.

Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.

"scroll" is nil on the occasion of crash, however on other computers it appears not to so the problem is: why is the scrollbar nil?
