First of all, I apologize to Jeff, I misunderstood him and thought he claimed authorship of whole subsystem but he didn't.

Thanks for the fixes, Vladimir and Robert.

Vladimir, if there had been more feedback on this bug report about the state of this work (that the only thing missing was configuration templating) maybe Jeff wouldn't have thought his patches were the full implementation.

It's sad that this bug has been mostly fixed since November (4 months ago!) but there was no followup here to let folks know what the situation was.

I consider myself a somewhat "advanced user" of grub, but i wasn't able to use this feature for the last several months because it wasn't documented and the status of the fix wasn't apparent.

More timely feedback would be welcome.

Thanks again for the work and the fixes.

Simultaneous input terminals were done in November by Robert, Output terminals were done by me. The configuration part was left out of 1.98 on purpose so only advanced users can get to this feature. Today I merged this part into experimental

@Jeff: it's not nice to claim you have implemented this when in fact you only created configuration template.

This patch works fine on Debian unstable on a PC, please apply and ship! This is important functionality.

GRUB_TERMINAL='serial console' works with attached patch.

just wanted to point out a workaround for the lack of boot-time console choice support for grub 1.9x:

Basically, it takes advantage of grub's new scripting support to allow the boot-time user to select a console and stick with it.

It's a bit clumsy, but it WorksForMeâ„¢.  I hope it's helpful.  Jameson Rollins and myself are currently maintaining that script on behalf of the debirf package, and are happy to take suggestions on it.

I think I see how to do this fairly straightforwardly with GRUB 2's terminal handler interface; I'll take a look at this.

In Debian Bug #506707 (http://bugs.debian.org/506707),  Miquel van Smoorenburg <miquels@cistron.nl> writes:
|All of our servers have a serial console connection so that we
|can manage them remotely. Our supermicro servers also have
|a bios that supports serial connections.
|However sometimes you need to boot a machine while standing next
|to it, with a screen and keyboard  connected.
|For that we always used the following grub setting in menu.lst:
|  # Set serial to ttyS0,9600 and use both serial and vga console.
|  serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
|  terminal serial console
|It appear that with the new setup using /etc/default/grub there
|is no way to specify terminal serial AND terminal console.
|It's one of them, but not both.
|I think that for many servers like ours this is a serious
|regression of functionality.
|I hacked around it by putting the serial config in
|/etc/grub.d/02_somefile , but it would be nice if this could
|be fixed properly. I'd like to be able to use:
|GRUB_SERIAL_COMMAND="serial --unit=0 --speed=9600"
|GRUB_TERMINAL="serial console"

I am forwarding this from the Debian BTS to yours to add a "me too". This is a serious regression which will keep big sites using grub-legacy for a while.
