From a discussion with David Corbett, about beam begin/end:

"They work, but the font has to do everything itself, with contextual lookups and so on. A double beam is simply what happens when a sixteenth note is part of a beam grouping, so it is encoded much like a single beam. For example, a pair of beamed sixteenth notes would be encoded ⟨begin-beam sixteenth-note sixteenth-note end-beam⟩. For a more complex example, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8e/Beamed_notes.svg would be encoded ⟨begin-beam eighth-note eighth-note dot sixteenth-note end-beam⟩."

Some documents make clear that these characters are meant to be used by application software.

The initial proposal for the Musical Symbols range

and the Unicode TR-27

(where is the current equivalent of this?)
both explain this.

In principle however, some limited support could be built into the font, via some substitution lookup feature.

For example, as simple beamed quarter note could be constructed.

So far, the needed features don't seem to be working in any environment at my disposal however.  So this may have to wait.

I do not know whether 1d173 and 1d174 (begin/end beam) actually work, or if there is any provision for double, triple etc. beams...
