This is an old bug and I wanted to reproduce it to see it is still valid. But what does it mean "change from from the menu" ? where? which application?

Changed the bug category to backend, as this problem seems to show up only with the art backend.

I just tried this with Ink and the xlib backend and it worked fine. As there shouldn't be much differences in the back ends on this functionality could you please retry?
Perhaps also with xlib and than note down the differences?
The only thing I can think up that could cause this is, that there isn't a matching font or enough font information so that [NSFontManager convertFont:toHaveTrait:] doesnt find a matching font.
Could you please yourself start debugging from there on?

Changing font to 'bold' or 'italics' from menu does not work. one has to use the font panel to do that. On the other hand, subscipt and superscript works from menu just fine.

I am using GNUstep CVS as of today (2005 Mar 13) with back-art.
