For ngc6543a (.jpg and .txt)

Found this:
https://solarviews.com/cap/ds/ngc6543a.htm

The .gif file shows the footer information, which has been the difficult part.

Maybe the cross reference STScI-PRC95-01 will help?

Created sunspot.dat file based on the noaa site

load sunspot.dat
year = sunspot (:, 1);
avSpots = sunspot (:, 2);

Works as expected, however
findpeaks (avSpots, year)

Fails with this error:

error: findpeaks: non-string for Parameter name or Switch
error: called from
error at line 573 column 7
parse at line 474 column 11
findpeaks at line 143 column 5

A plot was expected.
Was the file created wrong?

For sunspot.dat

I see the two things:
1) R data goes from 1700-1988
https://rdrr.io/r/datasets/sunspot.year.html

2) Activity sheet from 1700-2015
https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/outreach/info_activities/pdfs/MAA_sunspots_and_climate_change.pdf

From https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/about/disclaimer.html
It appears the information is in the public domain

ML states
average number of sunspots observed every year from 1700 to 1987

Is this just a two column file?
[year, avg_sunspots]

Or is there more information?

I added the west0479 data file in this changeset:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/c2c528319260

I agree that we should probably create a feature request on the bug tracker instead of having a discussion here with no patch(es).

This is still not fixed, so reopening. Maybe move to bugs, feature request, instead of patch if the lack of an actual patch is an issue?

Reviewing for Octave 6 release.  I see no patches attached.  Maybe this is a discussion more suited for the maintainers-mailing list.

Closing as there is nothing to do here.

Hi,

i have a suggestion:

There is an interesting site where you can find geomaps and gravity maps for Earth, Moon and Mars, based on satelite data.
I got some of it working in Octave, some examples is extremely slowly ...

Here the link:

http://www.asu.cas.cz/~bezdek/vyzkum/rotating_3d_globe/index.php#8a

May Be interesting for Octave example data file and for various great demos.

Best regards

It would be nice to have our own data files for demos and documentation purposes since they are often more complicated than they have to by first having to generate them.  If they could be the same as matlab then even nicer since it makes it easier to compare results.  Some may be on public domain or we could ask the original authors.

The following is a list of data files in Matlab 2017b (I have already removed penny.mat which is already part of Octave):
