Open-GL switch - I would give it a try. i think we usually see problems the other way - issues on 'system' that are fixed by going to 'software', but it can't hurt to check.

Hi everybody,

Unsurprisingly, the older versions didnt improve anything.
The launch took several minutes while Octave is always unstable and
the navigation widget caused Octave unstable too.

It seems on the v6, toggle off and toggle on made Octave more stable than the following versions. Not sure of that, I will do more to confirm.

I noticed the OpenGL-switch was on software on the user's workstation.
Should I switch it on System OpenGL ?

Thanks for the help

My apologies, I haven't been very clear. Octave becomes unstable when the user interacts with it. But after a few seconds, it comes back to normal until the user interacts with it again.

Editing the .ini doesn't improve anything. The Welcome wizard displays correctly and the global_skip_welcome_wizard comes back to true -> launch slow and unstable as before

I have already deleted the whole folder octave in the user profile. No improvements.
I have admin rights on the workstations. Does Octave need to go on the Internet on the launch ? Does it need to access to some folders to run with the file browser widget correctly ?

We have performed a proc-log at the launch and we have a total of about 140 000 lines.

We have the v6 and v8 available at the moment. But the user said that the issue happens too. Will try on my VM.

As far as I understood from comment #3, going back to old Octave versions does not fix the problem.

Have you already tried to remove the current ini-file? A corrupted ini-file might explain the observation that the issue showed up from one day to another and and does not depend on the version used.

There were a number of issues there relating back to the underlying Qt system, and some odd variability based on how the Qt system started.  according to the user:

"In both cases, these issues are eliminated if the Octave GUI displays the Welcome Wizard (or any other dialogs early enough). Adrien, I don't know how much troubleshooting you're able to do but is the modification of the octave-gui.ini file as stated above something you could attempt on the problem system? that file should be located in the user's profile under AppData\Roaming\octave

We had reports in the past that the file browser widget is slow for some users if they are working with remote file systems.

Does the user have any remote discs, Google Drive, SharePoint or anything similar?

Indeed, no difference.

The main user said he can run it. No issues.

Tested to switch the  HW/SW rendering on a test VM. Issues still there.

But the main user said that he's experiencing no issues when he toggled off the files explorer widget. It's probably what causes all theses issues when the Octave is fully launched.
At the moment, he's running Octave without it and workds with commands. But he really need this widget.

Are you able to run the command line only version of octave?  Open a CMD prompt, cd to the root folder, and run

octave-launch --no-gui

(there may also have been a CLI shortcut created, that should do the same thing)

if that runs fine, can you try toggling the hardware/software rendering?  perhaps a driver update is causing a problem, which would make sense that it affects new and old versions.

Last, you said this is on Win 10, but can you verify that Windows Terminal is not installed/set as default? longshot here, as this behavior doesn't sound related and it should produce a warning - but can you check using the instructions here:

Yes, according to user, all was running fine.
And Someday, something caused this slow launch and freezes.

Downloaded octave-9.2.0-w64-installer.exe from the gnu.org/octave and installed on "C:\Program files\GNU OCTAVE folder" manually and with a powershell script.

Yes for reinstalling. No for the zip package. Will try it ASAP

> Is this the first time you've used octave on this machine? Did any other versions exhibit the same issues or did they run without issue?

The user has Octave on his machine since the 6.0 version. He's running without issues and experienced problems this summer 2024. Going back to Octave 6.0 or 8.0 doesn't fix the problem

> What security software are you running?  Does temporarily disabling parts change the behavior?

We're running the Symantec Endpoint Protection on a environment and Windows Defender on another, ame problem on both environments.

Also, as this isn't something we've see before and suggests an issue on the machine or with other software, you may find it easier/more interactive to get troubeshooting support on the Octave forum at octave.discourse.group

Is this the first time you've used octave on this machine? Did any other versions exhibit the same issues or did they run without issue?

What security software are you running?  Does temporarily disabling parts change the behavior?

Hello,

We have a serious problem at the launch of OCTAVE 9.2 GUI.

It takes several minutes to launch. If the user tries to interact with it, Octave becomes unstable and crashes.

We are in a very closed environment (no internet, no admin rights for users,...)

Thanks for helping
