I was hoping we might get the Italian translation file before the first release candidate, but it looks like that won't happen.

Thank you to those who contributed language files so far.  We will move ahead to creating the first release candidate.

It's not exactly clear whether "access key", "keyboard accelerator", or "shortcut key" are different on Linux.

I found this guidance for translators of strings for Qt (https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/linguist-translators.html) which refers to "Alt Key Accelerators" and "Ctrl Key Accelerators".  In other words, Qt seems to combine both types of key combinations into "Accelerators".

Microsoft is explicit that there are "Access Keys" (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/input/access-keys) which use Alt and "Keyboard Accelerators" (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/input/keyboard-accelerators) which use Ctrl.

I don't think it would be bad to use the Microsoft terminology.  Although we still might want to substitute "keyboard shortcut" for "keyboard accelerator".

Dutch translation (AFAICS no more "unfinished" tags)

at least in the Windows world, "access key" is the term for the underlined letters in the menu item name, while "keyboard accelerator" is synonym with "shortcut key", the combination shown to the right of the menu item:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/3021705/2103990
the terminology seems valid elsewhere:
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/b31973/ap_kbd.htm#ADFUI10150
however, I could not confirm the situation in the Linux world.
not a big deal though, as long as the term "menu" appears right next to the term.

regarding the common vocabulary: The difference "shortcut" and "accelerator" is intended. In my understanding, something like "Ctrl+R" for invoking a specific action is a shortcut, whereas "Alt+R", where "R" is the highlighted character in a menu name, is an "accelerator" of this menu.

I just checked how we are doing on the translation files by counting the number of translations tagged with "unfinished".

pt_BR.ts: 0
es_ES.ts: 0
zh_CN.ts: 0
de_DE.ts: 0
fr_FR.ts: 0
nl_NL.ts: 8
tr_TR.ts: 9
hu_HU.ts: 9
ru_RU.ts: 71
it_IT.ts: 147
lt_LT.ts: 212
ja_JP.ts: 213
ca_ES.ts: 318
pt_PT.ts: 402
eu_ES.ts: 492
be_BY.ts: 564
uk_UA.ts: 983

I would expect Philip to update the nl_NL.ts file.  And I think the Italian file it_IT.ts will probably be updated.  I don't know if the others will before the 8.1 release.

A common vocabulary seems like a "nice to have" rather than a "need to have" feature so I would vote to work on this on the development branch.

The changes need to be done in the C++ files. Although there is an en_US.ts file, it is just used as a template for new languages. Depending on the number of changes the language files could be updated manually afterwards in order to keep the existing translation for this "new" text string.

Should this common vocabulary should be part of the next release?

> may I suggest standardizing some terms in the future?

I think this is a good idea, i.e., a common vocabulary.

> folders -> directories [or vice versa]
> folder -> directory [or vice versa]

I prefer directory/directories (more UNIX way of thinking).

Do the changes need to take place in the C++ code and the strings themselves?  Or is the change in the translation file such that the original string "directory" is not translated to "folder"?

> pink -> magenta

In English these two colors are entirely different.  The RGB code given is [255, 0, 255] which is magenta.  I will update the original string which is just wrong in this case.

> accelerator -> shortcut

I think "shortcut" is probably more understandable for most users.

@Markus: a new update is not required. The translated expressions were already existing but were not triggered at runtime.

Inspecting the Spanish translation I can see that the translation of the strings from octave::settings_dialog

Second color mode (light/dark)

and

&Reload default colors

and

&Reload default styles

are not substituted in the GUI. I don't know if the same occurs for the other languages. I'm running the stable branch compiled by myself this morning before I sent the es_ES updated file in order to check it

@Felipe: Just to be explicit about timing.  It would be great if translation files were available by next Friday, December 2nd.  But, if the files came in within two weeks (Friday, December 9th) that will still make it into the 8.1 release.

If I'm reading the logs correctly, there have been 2-3 weeks between the call for translations and the first release candidate in the past. Most translations have been pushed during that time. But there have been some that were pushed after the first release candidate.

We are currently planning on releasing Octave 8.1 late 2022 or early 2023. The exact date will probably depend on the number of bugs found in the release candidate(s) and how difficult they will be to fix. But we are hoping for a smooth release process this time.
Translations that are submitted after Octave 8.1 has been released will probably still be able to make it into Octave 8.2.

But if my memory serves me well, we received most feedback on the first release candidate of new major releases in the past. So, it would probably be good to have that version "as complete as possible" (including the translations).

I also created a topic on the discourse forum here to reach out to translators:
https://octave.discourse.group/t/call-for-translations-for-octave-8/3617

I don't know if all translators are on the discourse forum, too. And I was only able to find the users names for a couple of them.
We should probably also reach out to them via email (like we did in the past).

Yes, all work is being done on the stable branch.

I would make a new directory 'libgui/languages/build_ts' and add any scripts and additional material there.

@Torsten: They have not been updated.  We definitely need to do that before we contact translators.  Yesterday at the Octave developer's meeting we also talked about making the release procedures reproducible.  Part of this is checking any scripts we use into Mercurial.  Second part is documenting what we do so any developer could step in and perform the task.

I think for Octave 8 that would be a good goal.  I seem to have a script for generating language files and two archive files (octave-qt.tar.gz, qsci.tar.gz) that I got from you back in February 2020.  Have there been any updates?  Actually, there have to have been because the script opens with

QT_LANG_DIR=/usr/share/qt4/translations

and we no longer support Qt4.

Easiest thing would be for you to generate the .ts files again for the 8.1 release, and record the process and any inputs you use.

If you are very much too busy this year then I can try to do it, but I will need to ask you questions along the way.

This issue report is dedicated to the translation files for the Octave 8.1 Release.

When translators finish updating the language files for the 8.1 release please upload them to this issue report.

The Octave Maintainers will then download the files, place them under version control, and incorporate them into the 8.1 release.
