octave-2022-10-16-00-10-release-w64-installer seems to have corrected the issue.

(correcting tags/title I replaced on last comment)

please let us know if you still have the addpath error and/or if the canonicalize_file_name and ls command outputs are different with the newer version.

I don't believe so.  It should create a Program Files/GNU Octave/Octave-7.2.1 folder so they don't collide. but if you want to play it safe it may be best to do so. (the desktop icons my overwrite). I usually don't work with multiple versions using the exe installers, I use the zip/7z versions for that.

Downloaded: octave-2022-10-16-00-10-release-w64-installer.exe

Do I need to uninstall version 7.2.0 from octave-7.2.0-w64-installer.exe, before installing octave-2022-10-16?

do you get an error message after attempting:

name = canonicalize_file_name('U:\Octave\MyFunctions')
ls(name)

are you able to test with one of the newer windows builds that includes the bug #62847 fix? nightly builds can be found for testing at https://buildbot.octave.space/#/download.

Yes U: is a network drive.

name = U:\homefolders\JCallas0308\Home\Octave\MyFunctions

As stated this was working with version 7.1.0.
Installed 7.2.0 this morning and message appears when Octave is started.
Using  same .octaverc  file. It did no change.

is U: a local or a network drive?  what do you get from the following command within octave:

[name,status,message] = canonicalize_file_name('U:\Octave\MyFunctions')

might this be related to recently fixed bug #62847?

Was running Octave 7.1.0.
Uninstalled 7.1.0 and installed Octave 7.2.0
Configured for "x86_64-w64-mingw32".

Below is my .octaverc file from Octave 7.1.0 which contains the path to functions that I wrote.

## Begin savepath auto-created section, do not edit
  addpath ('U:\Octave\MyFunctions', '-begin');
## End savepath auto-created section

This was working fine under Octave 7.1.0.
Downloaded octave-7.2.0-w64-installer.exe

After install of Octave 7.2.0, I get the following error/warning:

warning: addpath: U:\Octave\MyFunctions: No such file or directory
warning: called from
    C:\Users\JCALLA~1\.octaverc at line 2 column 3
