No objections to the proposition in comment #5 during the last week. So, I pushed a change to the stable branch that opens a (hopefully annoying) dialog on each startup of Octave when the Windows Terminal is used:

Unfortunately, users seem to be ignoring the warning during installation that was added for Octave for Windows 8.4.0:
https://hg.octave.org/mxe-octave/rev/4f25eb25a80b

We are still getting reports about this for Octave 8.4.0, e.g., bug #64932.

Maybe, it would help to go a step further and nag those users with a warning on each startup. See the attached patch.

Potentially, we should go even another step further and open a warning dialog that a user would need to close manually to really make them realize that they are using an unsupported configuration.

I'd prefer the latter, but didn't come around to adapt the patch for it yet.

Would adding something like that in Octave's startup file be ok?

It is unlikely this will be fixed for Octave 7 and a work-around is available.
Setting release to "dev".

No more feedback in about a week. But assuming this is the same issue that came up a couple of times recently about the new Windows Terminal App. In that case, I can confirm the issue.

This would likely disappear for the new cross-platform command window widget that is currently still experimental.

For the time being, the work-around is to switch Windows to the "classic" Console Host. See comment #1.

ISTR a similar report.
Do you use the new Windows Terminal as the default console?
If you do, try setting it to the (older) Windows console host. See, e.g., the following blog post for where to find that setting:
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/windows-terminal-as-your-default-command-line-experience/

Does that make a difference?

Installing Octave 7.1.0 from .exe after uninstalling a working Octave 6.4.0 results with following behavior when running the GUI shortcut.

- Both CLI and GUI open
- Anything types/displayed on either of CLI or GUI Command window is shown on both
- GUI crashes after a while (seen once) with CLI staying with error code
