Thanks Markus. Let me give this a go. I didn't see the emails so just happened to check the bug!

Thank you for the report.

I can confirm that issue on Ubuntu 22.04.

Something must have changed in gnulib without us noticing.

I pushed the following change to the stable branch that fixes the issue for me:
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/8ee6422d1292

It should be part of Octave 7.2.0 when it will be released.

Marking as ready for test.

Oh, and the build is fine with SSL disabled. There are symbols clashing when it statically links with gnulib but I don't know where this is coming from.

Maybe some logic in the build system is using gnulib's SHA512 and MD5 bits even when OpenSSL is enabled, when instead it should be one or the other? I didn't have time to look into it further (yet?).

This seems to have started with 7.1.0 as 6.4.0 is fine with the same configuration otherwise.

Noticed in Gentoo originally (https://bugs.gentoo.org/842645) when packaging 7.1.0 but forwarding my own report upstream.

Error looks like:
```
I've attached the full build.log.xz (needed to be compressed due to size). Our ebuild (packaging) is available at https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/sci-mathematics/octave/octave-7.1.0.ebuild?id=510489d817fdc246fd73b7000886692ee27ff699.
Let me know if I can provide more information.
